Love Sick by Tudor Giurgiu

Love. It just happens. No rules. It may look sick, but it’s deep and it hurts. For everyone, Alex and Kiki are just two good friends. They happen to be two girls experiencing another kind of love. For their family, Kiki and Sandu are sister and brother who sometimes fight. They happen to be lovers. Love Sick is about their stories.

Alex, a Philology student in Bucharest, moves from the campus to a rented room. The building is old and unfriendly, and the landlady, Mrs. Benes, is a lonely, unbearable old woman, but Alex seems pleased with her new place. Her University mate, Cristina (Kiki), lives in the same building. This is how the two girls will get the chance to spend more time together and know each other better.

Their friendship develops quickly, overcoming several phases, from fellowship to care and tenderness. The two girls have different natures, though: Alex, a strong one, concealed under the appearance of a quiet disposition, wishes to study so she should not disappoint her parents who brought her up in the spirit of an elementary common sense, while Kiki is histrionic, extravagant; she is a show-off, actually trying to hide her emotional instability. In spite of all the unavoidable conflicts, where Kiki tries to impose herself, the two girls get along fine, except for the moments when a third character shows up. It’s Sandu, Kiki’s brother, permanently tormented by an unnatural jealousy which makes us suspect an incestuous liaison between the two siblings.

Initially, the story focuses on the friendship between Alex and Kiki, occasionally over-shadowed by Sandu’s presence, on the small everyday details.

A couple of months later, the two girls are already a couple, so there’s a real reason for Sandu’s jealousy. Alex suggests they should spend the summer at her parents’ house, in the country. There they find an archaic, but reassuring world which may become, after a little getting used to, reassuring. The two girls live their love story to the full, in old-fashioned discothèques and bars, feeding on cheap vodka and naive philosophies. It’s an idyllic summer, until Sandu shows up to take Kiki back to Bucharest.
